Moganshan’s history is peppered with stories of wealth, glamour, and politics. But it was not always fun and games. Legend has it that in China’s late Spring and Autumn Period (722-481 BC) the Wu Emperor summoned skilled sword smith couple Gan Jiang and wife Mo Ye to make a pair of swords in the pure springs of the mountain.
Upon presenting their masterpieces to the emperor, their heads were immediately chopped off! So impressed with the swords, the emperor killed them so that they would not be able to recreate such incredible weapons again. As a tribute to these two craftsmen, the area was named after them: “Mount Mo Gan” (Moganshan).
